According to the Italy Embassy in Lisbon, the Portuguese shoemaking industry is gratifying.

In 2007, output increased by 4.5%, reaching 75 million pairs, 90% of product exports, and 2% of export growth. Due to the increase in domestic market demand for domestic products, domestic sales also performed well, indicating that the Portuguese shoemaking industry had strong adaptability to the competition of shoemaking industry from China, Vietnam, India, Malaysia and Macao of China.

Portugal has become the seventh largest exporter of shoes in the world and the third largest in Europe, and the only European country with trade surplus in the industry.
