Consumer Price Rises

In March 2020, consumer prices nationwide rose by 4.3% over the same period last year. Among them, cities rose 4%, rural areas rose 5.3%, food prices rose 18.3%, non food prices rose 0.7%, consumer goods prices rose 6.2%, and service prices rose 1.1%. In the first quarter, consumer prices nationwide rose by 4.9% over the same period last year.

In March, the consumer price of the whole country decreased by 1.2%. Among them, the city decreased by 1.2%, the rural area decreased by 1.3%, the food price dropped by 3.8%, the non food price dropped by 0.4%, the consumer price dropped by 1.7%, and the service price dropped by 0.3%.


I. Changes in prices of goods and services year-on-year

In March, the price of food and alcoholic drinks increased by 13.6% over the same period last year, affecting the CPI (consumer price index) by an increase of about 4.10 percentage points. In the food, the price of livestock and meat increased by 78%, which affected the increase of CPI by about 3.44 percentage points, of which pork prices rose by 116.4%, which affected the increase of CPI by about 2.79 percentage points. The price of aquatic products rose by 2.8%, which affected the increase of CPI by about 0.05 percentage points. The price of eggs rose 1.9%, which affected CPI's rise by 0.01 percentage points, and the prices of fresh fruits and fresh vegetables decreased by 6.1% and 0.1% respectively, which in turn affected the decline of CPI by about 0.1. 2 percentage points.

The other seven categories of prices rose four or three over the same period. Among them, prices of other goods and services, educational culture and entertainment increased by 5.3% and 2.5% respectively, and the prices of medical care, daily necessities and services rose by 2.2% and 0.3% respectively. Traffic, communications, clothing and living prices decreased by 3.8%, 0.3% and 0.1% respectively.


Two. Price fluctuation of commodities and services

In March, the price of food and alcoholic drinks decreased by 2.7%, which affected CPI by about 0.90 percentage points. The price of fresh vegetables dropped by 12.2%, affecting CPI by about 0.39 percentage points, and the price of livestock and meat decreased by 5.2%, affecting CPI by about 0.41 percentage points, of which pork prices dropped by 6.9%, affecting CPI by about 0.36 percentage points. Egg prices dropped by 4.3%, affecting CPI by about 0.02 percentage points, and the price of aquatic products dropped by 3.5%, affecting CPI by about 0.07 percentage points.

The other seven categories of prices rose two, or five. Among them, other goods and services, medical and health care prices rose by 0.4% and 0.2% respectively; transportation and communications and housing prices fell by 2.5% and 0.3% respectively, while clothing, daily necessities and services, educational culture and entertainment prices dropped by 0.1%.
